Dalgona coffee is a frothy whipped coffee made with only 3 ingredients. Served with iced milk, it's super tasty!

What is dalgona coffee?
Also known as "whipped coffee", "frothy coffee" and "fluffy coffee," dalgona coffee is a trend that emerged in February 2020 in South Korea. A simple combination of instant coffee, sugar and hot water, whipped coffee made its way into kitchens around the world in the era of social distancing, just as everyone was looking for a new culinary adventure.
The origins
It's good to know that whipped coffee is not a recent phenomenon. It's been around in countries such as India, Greece and Pakistan for quite some time.
Ingredients
To make whipped coffee, you only need three ingredients:
- Instant coffee: make sure you're not using those packets with sweetener and creamer. Any brand would work.
- Granulated sugar: this coffee is usually made with granulated white sugar. We'll talk more about using other sweeteners.
- Hot water: I mean HOT hot water, right after boiling hot water.

How to make whipped coffee at home
Making this recipe at home is so simple! Place instant coffee, sugar and hot water in a bowl and start beating on high using your hand mixer. Whip for about 2 to 4 minutes until it's stiff and fluffy.
How to serve
Now that your fluffy whipped coffee concoction is ready, it's time to serve it! Place a few ice cubes in a glass and fill it halfway with milk. Scoop the coffee mixture on the milk and serve.
To drink, stir in the coffee into iced milk using a spoon or a straw. The drink will still be pretty frothy.

Frequently asked questions
While classic dalgona coffee is made with white granulated sugar, you can also use brown sugar, coconut sugar or other sweeteners such as Stevia. Keep in mind that the final result might not be as fluffy as what you'll get with granulated sugar.
Unfortunately, no. This recipe only works with instant coffee. You can also use decaffeinated instant coffee.
You actually can just leave the sweetener (whether it's granulated sugar, coconut sugar or stevia) out. However, your whipped coffee won't keep its shape for more than 5 minutes. In addition to making it sweet, sugar also keeps dalgona coffee stiff for about one hour.
Yes! But be aware that it would take longer (10 to 15 minutes) for the coffee to be all frothy and airy, so you'll need a good amount of elbow grease!
This depends on how "milky" you want your drink to be. Anything between ½ to ¾ of a glass would work.
Yes, my favorite non dairy milk to serve with whipped coffee is oat milk.
Yes! Depending on the weather and how you like your coffee, you can use iced or hot milk with your whipped coffee.

Dalgona Coffee (Whipped Coffee)
Ingredients
- 2 tablespoon instant coffee
- 2 tablespoon granulated sugar
- 2 tablespoon hot water
- ½ cup ice
- 1 ½ cup milk
Instructions
- Place instant coffee and sugar in a bowl.
- Pour in the hot water into the bowl and using an electric mixer, mix the instant coffee and sugar with water for about 2 to 4 minutes until it's frothy and stiff.
- Fill two glasses with ice and milk. Scoop the whipped coffee over milk for each glass. Serve immediately.
Notes
- You can use other sweeteners such as coconut sugar, brown sugar or Stevia for this recipe.
- If looking for a nondairy milk option, oat milk works well.
- Make sure you're using instant coffee and not ground coffee. Ground coffee won't work for this recipe as it can't dissolve in hot water.
