If you love watermelon, you're in for a treat today! Our watermelon juice just got a facelift and a Mexican twist: I present you this delicious watermelon cucumber agua fresca!
What is agua fresca?
Agua fresca, which means "fresh water" is a non-alcoholic drink made with fruit, cereals, flowers or seeds blended with water and sugar. Sometimes herbs such as mint and citrus such as lemon or lime are added to the drink as well to give a kick to the flavor. Some popular flavors of agua fresca are cucumber, tamarind and hibiscus. This drink is popular in Mexico and central America.
Cucumber watermelon agua fresca
To make this drink at home, you need a few ingredients including watermelon, cucumber, water, lemon juice and sugar. Seedless watermelon would work perfectly in this recipe.
If you're making a big batch of watermelon agua fresca, it's best to make it in two smaller batches to make sure there are no chunks left and the drink is pretty smooth.
Can I make this drink sugar free?
Yes! Instead of sugar, use maple syrup or honey to make this recipe. You can also use stevia, coconut sugar or simply leave any kind of sweetener out.
Do I need to strain the watermelon agua fresca?
You don't have to strain it necessarily, but if you like the drink to be very smooth and clear, I recommend you strain it. Serve over ice and enjoy a tasty and refreshing drink.
Can I make it ahead of time?
I love serving this drink fresh but you can also make it a couple of hours ahead of time. Just give it another blend before serving. You can also have all the ingredients chopped and ready in the blender and start blending right before serving.
