If you love tea as much as I do, today's recipe is for you! This sweet and creamy milk tea is easy to make and so delicious. It's perfect for days when you're craving something sweet but not too rich. This drink is more indulgent than honey lemon tea or parsley tea, but still light enough to brighten up your day.
What is milk tea?
Milk tea is basically the combination of milk and any kind of tea. You can find different types of this drink around the world such as London fog or matcha latte. Today I'm going to show you how to make this recipe using black tea and whole milk. This is the simplest one and once you learn how to make it, you can get creative with flavor combinations.
Ingredients
Black tea
Loose leaf black tea such as Ceylon works best for this recipe. Loose leaf tea has more flavor and depth compared to tea bags.
Water
This recipe calls for very few ingredients so it's best to use quality items. As for water, try to use filtered water instead of tap water for better flavor.
Sweetener
When comes to sweetening, you can use any kind of sweetener you please. From honey and maple syrup to brown sugar or stevia, it's possible to use your favorite sweetener. As for the amount of sweetener, it depends on how sweet you like you beverage.
Milk
It's best to use whole milk for this recipe to have a creamy milk tea. If looking for other options, 2% milk would work as well as non dairy milk.
How to make milk tea at home
- Bring some water to boil.
- Place loose leaf tea in a teapot and pour in the water. Cover and let the tea steep for 5-7 minutes.
- Strain the tea leaves and pour the tea into cups.
- Stir in the honey or your favorite sweetener.

Tea
You can use other flavors of tea to make this beverage. I usually use Caylon loose leaf black tea for this recipe but strong green tea also works.
Sweeteners
Any kind of sweetener would work for this recipe including honey, brown sugar, maple syrup or date molasses. The amount of each sweetener depends on your preference and how sweet you like your it to be.
Spices and flavors
A dash of cinnamon adds warmth to this beverage. However, you can use other flavors such as cloves, cardamom or star anise.
Notes and tips to make the best milk tea
- For more decadent milk tea, use half and half instead of milk.
- You can make the tea in a sauce pan but it's best to have a good teapot when it comes to making tea. If you love drinking tea, invest in a nice teapot.
- If you don't have loose leaf tea, you can use tea bags. Use one tea bag per person to make this recipe.
- It's important that your brewed tea is strong since you're going to mix it with sweetener and milk. Therefore make sure that you use the right amount of tea and water.
- Is this the same as bubble tea? No, bubble tea is milk tea with boba balls in it.

How To Make Milk Tea
Ingredients
- 2 cup water
- 3 tsp loose leaf black tea such as Ceylon
- 2 tsp honey
- ½ cup whole milk preferably warm
- ¼ teaspoon cinnamon optional
Instructions
- Bring the water to boil. Place the tea in the teapot.
- Pour water over the tea and cover. Let it steep for 5-7 minutes.
- Strain the tea leaves and pour the tea into two cups.
- Stir in the honey and add milk.
- Serve warm.

- It's best to use filtered water for this recipe.
