What can I make with simple syrup?
You can use it to make many drinks such as green tea lemonade or peach lemonade. It can be used in drinks such as agua fresca as well. Having a bottle of simple syrup in the fridge can come handy in many occasions such as sweetening iced coffee or iced tea.
The ratio of water to sugar
It's best to use equal parts of sugar and water to make this recipe. The 1:1 ratio guarantees that your syrup has the right consistency and sweetness without getting crystalized.
How to make simple syrup at home
- Combine equal parts of sugar and water in a sauce pan and place over medium heat.
- Bring to a low simmer. Let the syrup simmer for about 5 minutes.
- Turn the heat off and let the simmer cool completely.
- Store in a bottle and refrigerate. you can keep it in the refrigerator for up to one month.

Flavor variations
- Citrus: Use lemon, lime or orange peels to give a nice bright flavor.
- Cinnamon: Add one cinnamon stick to the sugar and water while it's simmering. Discard the stick before storing.
- Herbs: A few springs of rosemary, mint or thyme would add a wonderful earthy flavor.
- Honey: Make a sugar free simple syrup by leaving out the white sugar and using equal parts honey and water.
- Ginger: Add about 1 inch sliced ginger to the mixture while it's simmering. Discard the ginger slices before pouring it into the bottle.
- Vanilla: Split a vanilla bean and add it to the sugar and water. Once it's ready, take the vanilla bean out and save it for another batch later.
