What is mango lassi?
Lassi is essentially a yogurt based drink originated in the Indian subcontinent. It's a simple combination of yogurt with water (optional) and spices and sometimes, flavored with fruit.
There are two types of lassi: salty and sweet. As for salty lassi, it's usually made with yogurt, water and spices. Sweet lassi on the other hand is usually made with yogurt, sugar, warm spices and fruit, which in this recipe is mango.
Mango lassi is probably the most popular lassi among non-Indians since it's served in many Indian restaurants. It's creamy and refreshing, with just the right amount of sweetness.
Benefits of drinking lassi in summer
Drinking lassi in summer comes with a lot of benefits. Because of yogurt, it's very good for you digestive system and might help with stomach problems. This drink is a good source of probiotics and can also boost your immune system.
What does mango lassi taste like?
The flavor is sweet like mangos and the texture is creamy. It's thinner than a milkshake and has the consistency of a smoothie.
Ingredients and substitutions
Mangoes - I usually opt for one cup of mango per person and my favorite variety is alphonso mango. You can use any other variety of mango that's sweet and ripe. Store-bought mango pulp would work as well.
Yogurt - Whole milk yogurt works best for this recipe, but low fat would work too. The amount of yogurt depends on how thick you'd like the lassi to be. I usually use one cup of yogurt per person. It's also possible to use dairy free yogurt as long as it's not flavored.
Milk - This is an optional ingredient to add, but a bit of milk makes this mango lassi a bit lighter. You can easily leave the milk out. If using, any kind of milk including whole milk and plant based milk would work.
Sugar - The amount of sugar needed for this recipe depends on how sweet the mangoes are and what your preference is. Start with one tablespoon and add more if needed. You can also leave the sugar out.
Cardamom - I love the addition of ground cardamom to mango lassi. The flavor combination is just perfect and it adds such nice flavor and aroma to the drink.
How to make mango lassi
- If using a fresh mango, cut it on both sides of the pit and cut it into chunks. You can check out this video on how to cut a mango.
- Place the mango chunks in a blender and add yogurt and milk.
- Add in the sugar and cardamom. Blend on high until everything is well combined.
- Taste and add more sugar if needed.
- Divide among two glasses and serve.
Pro tip:
I usually keep everything in the fridge so the drink is served cold. You can also serve mango lassi over ice if you want it to be super cold.
